excerpts from

pain is proof

mfa manuscript, otis college of art & design 2011

the north star is neon

stumbling over the threshold

he teeters at the curb

shuffles into the street

cradling salvation

swaddled in brown paper

mumbles what he remembers

by and by

lawd

by and by

but she cries for you

you exist only in this picture

daughter in the crook of your arm

she is too young to remember you

she wants to forget

he bought her a nightlight

in the shape of a star

she stares into the glow

like a good girl

until he is finished

what have they done

everyday has been your face

your crumpled body at my feet

the sirens muffling my screams
